The Design Joburg Summer Collective is a showcase held in the Kramerville District with 44 Stanley as one of two fringe districts.

As part ot the collective we’ll be hosting talks and conversations in the Bioscope by experts in our community.

12pm - Why Good Design Matters (The Bioscope) 

Although we may not be aware of it, design is one of the most powerful forces in our lives. It has been at the core of the 44 Stanley precinct since its inception and impacts every aspect of the community and the businesses within it. From spaces to experiences to products and how they are packaged and sold, the panel will look at good design and how it is essential to the success of all business going forward.

10am - I Love You, I Hate You by Love Jozi (The Bioscope) 

Bradley Kirshenbaum presents a hugely entertaining fast-paced 40-minute talk that distills the ethos behind Love Jozi's unique imagery and how the city of Joburg, with all its inherent challenges and surprises, became the brand's distinctive muse.

10am - Made it to the life raft: art and fashion in a post covid moment (The Bioscope) 

Visual artists Cintha Sifa Mulanga and Puleng Mongale in conversation with SA designer Lisa Jaffe of Guillotine Design about the intersection of contemporary art and fashion on the occasion of the new Latitudes Online x L’MAD collection of silk scarves.

11am - Fashion is industry, style is culture by Blue Canvas Life’s Thando Made (The Bioscope) 

Glenn O’Brien, American writer and GQ’s long standing ‘Style Guy’ wrote that ‘fashion is industry, style is culture. Ideas and themes, arts and rituals, the things that constitute culture.’ Together with fellow denim aficionado, Rodney Mudzengerere from IFUKU vintage denim and men’s store, Thando talks to how more people are looking at style as a form of self-expression and how communities are being created around this within 44 Stanley, Jozi and beyond.

12pm - Triptych : Prayer Protest Peace a listening session presented by DJ Kenzhero (The Library of Things we forgot to Remember)

The Library is an interactive audio-visual archive of black resistance. It was founded in 2017 by Zimbabwean artist Kudzanai Chiurai, and includes his extensive vinyl record collection of music related to different liberation movements in southern Africa from the 1970s-80s. The library has travelled and hosted exhibitions in Harare, Cape Town, Kalmar, Södertälje, and Johannesburg and is heading to Paris. 

DJ Kenzhero, veteran Johannesburg DJ and long-time friend and collaborator of Kudzanai will be presenting a listening session in the space.

A new season

Spring is here, we can see it in the green shoots, jasmine and wisteria, the longer days and the warmer weather (we hope are here to stay for good).

We’re happy that the new season brings loads of new energy and excitement.

Glow Theory is the first retail store in South Africa dedicated to K-beauty. Korean beauty is centred around nature inspired ingredients and an extensive range of products, in order to create a custom skincare solution for every individual. Pop in to chat to Tamsin and the team, about all things skincare.
Even After All, an all day eatery, will open its doors in September. We look forward to scrumptious meals made with love, for the whole family. An excellent addition to the community.
Actor Spaces, a digital magazine, aimed at documenting and archiving stories of African actors while celebrating the tremendous talent, skills and expertise in South African Film, Television and Theatre.
Me & B, an inspirational mother and daughter team from Cape Town will soon grace our centre with their flair. Their designs are built around a community of inclusivity and fun, regardless body shape. This step towards encouraging body positivity in individuals, is an aim we applaud.

The Bioscope has a great line up from comedy to classic movies be sure to book your ticket.
Guillotine, brain child of designer Lisa Jaffe, is celebrating their one year anniversary for their online store! We’re happy to see them reach this milestone. Pop in during the month of September for the release of their Spring range.
